Remote Play or cloud streaming on PlayStation Portal?
PlayStation Portal can play games in two ways: via Remote Play from your own PS5, or via cloud streaming from Sony’s servers. Which one fits depends on whether you own a PS5 and which games you want to play.
| Remote Play | Cloud-Streaming | |
|---|---|---|
| Needs a PS5 | Yes, switched on or in rest mode | No |
| Subscription | None | PS Plus Premium |
| Games | Almost everything on your PS5, including PS4 games and discs | Selected PS5 games – 4,317 in United States right now |
| Streams from | Your console at home | Sony’s servers |
| Best for | Playing at home, all your games | Without a PS5, or on the road with good Wi-Fi |
Remote Play: your own PS5
The Portal mirrors your PS5 over the internet. That works with almost every game on your console – including PS4 games and discs – and needs no extra subscription. Your PS5 has to be switched on or in rest mode with Remote Play enabled. Sony recommends a fast connection at home, especially a good upload. A few games, such as PS VR2 titles, can’t be played this way.
Cloud streaming: no PS5 needed
With PS Plus Premium, the Portal streams selected PS5 games straight from Sony’s servers – no console needed. You need Wi-Fi with at least 5 Mbps, 13 Mbps for 1080p. Everything about cloud streaming.
Which one should you use?
- You own a PS5: Remote Play covers all your games. Cloud streaming helps when the PS5 is busy (someone else is using the TV) or your home upload is slow.
- You don’t own a PS5: cloud streaming with PS Plus Premium is the only way.
Every game page on psportal.games says which way works for a game in United States.
